Today I saw the second part of Bilbo's journey.
First of all, did anyone notice Peter Jackson's fleeting appearance right at the start? Sweaty nerds? Ok, I saw the movie in High frame rate and I am not sure if I have gotten used to this format yet. It might take more time and more frequent movie watching rather than once a year to be comfortable with. That part taken aside, the movie itself was great. The Middle Earth is bigger and better. The people behind the movie have so much grasp of this world, it almost feels like a real place. There is just so much detail. I must say I do not why I haven't been able to read the book yet (nor the LOTR novels) but this movie did look like it did justice to them. A new character pretty major to the storyline was introduced i.e Tauriel and she is not in the books. But she merged into the story just fine with no appearance of being a push-in. She was played well according to me by Evangeline Lilly. Legolas appeared as well (although not being a part of the Hobbit novel). We see Suaron (remember?) and finally the dragon with that menacing voice of Benedict Cumberbatch. This movie was just the dwarves and Bilbo's journey to under the mountain. We did not quite see the actual "desolation". That would be seen in the next movie. So there is more of Smaug left for the third movie as he is approaching Laketown to wreck havoc once again. Gandalf has now been captured by the Orcs in Dol Goldur of course with the help of Suaron. Trouble is brewing and the world is in grave danger.
Richard Armitage and Luke Evans were great. This seemed more like Thorin's movie and Richard brought great depth into the character. Sir Ian McKellen again plays Gandalf wonderfully and you gotta love Martin Freeman and his subtle humor as Bilbo Baggins.
Finally, I liked the soundtrack but I liked the song sung by the dwarves in the first one better. It had more of a Middle Earth feel to it according to me.
Be ready for the final battle, the battle of the five armies!
