This is an excellent movie with an Oscar contending performance by the lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal. The movie is driven by acting but the story is compelling as well. Its a well rounded movie in all regards. Essentially, its about a thief turned night reporter who records "real" news by going to places where no news journalist goes but at the same time, they would gobble it up and broadcast it for the sake of ratings and viewership. The movie makes you think about the culture of news here in America or indeed the society and what it considers as entertainment. I would not delve into the culture now as this is a movie review. Jake's acting as a crazy yet expressionless and no-eye-blinking "nightcrawler" video reporter who would do anything from taking out his competitors to changing the crime scene to get the best shot, is superb. Rene Russo also plays gives a great supporting role to Jake's character. The director Dan Gilroy deserves a special credit from me as well considering this is his first movie.
