Mission Impossible : Rogue Nation Movie Review

I was delayed to watch this movie but I finally completed the mission and it was an entertaining one. Ethan Hunt is my favorite action character right now. Bond might have better story and Bourne might have Matt Damon but MI has Tom Cruise and amazing side characters.

Rogue Nation has the discarded and disgraced IMF fighting a enemy called the Syndicate comprising of disavowed and presumed dead spies from different countries who have the task to continue to create chaos around the world for a decade to come through unlimited supply of untraceable currency. It is up to Ethan and his team of course to not let that happen. He got the most help this time from the computer guy Benji (who also loves Halo) and one Ilsa Faust. Simon Pegg had more of a screen presence with substance this time and he was great. But man, Rebecca Ferguson (Ilsa) was awesome, beautiful, badass all at once. I loved her. Its great when a sudden actor (not necessarily new) just pop ups through the character they portray and how they do it. It was the same case with Colin Firth in Kingsman. Rebecca is great in every scene she is in from emoting fear and helplessness in some scenes to just owning the screen (with or without Tom) with incredible fighting skills and action in others. Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames and Alec Baldwin had minor roles but they were good with their part. Sean Harris who plays the antagonist did a wonderful job. He never really played a big part in front of the screen in most scenes but his presence can be felt throughout the story which I liked. I assume its not always necessary to have a 1v 1 battle between the hero and the villain and this is why I loved the ending for the movie (will not spoil this one).

Coming back to the star, Tom Cruise is 53 and its hard to imagine him doing this movie and the stunts he does all by himself. I completely believe him when he says he does it to entertain us lot. His off field actions might have got him scrutinized but as long as they don't affect others I only see him as an actor and boy is he an entertaining one. Go Tom. This movie is consistently well paced with no slowing down (on unnecessary arcs) and constant beat and director Christopher McQuarrie deserves a credit for that. Highly recommended to get some fun time.

Looking forwards to MI 6 now.
