It Follows Movie Review

I do not watch a lot of horror movies. I remember the last one was probably The Conjuring which was great. It Follows is a much smaller budgeted indie film and its equally good. If you had heard the synopsis, you would most probably laugh out at the idea behind the film. But this proves why nothing is impossible. Even the strangest idea can be realized with an honest sincerity. Having someone always following you slowly can be creepy as it is and with an added intention to kill you is even more so. Not as a joke but this movie reminded of this spoon killer movie.

The movie stars Jay played by Maika Monroe who after a night out with her boyfriend is transmitted an unknown entity that will follow her until she passes it on through sex or gets killed herself. The film explores her journey and struggle to handle this entity and get rid of it. What this "it" is open to interpretation. It could be a play on sexually transmitted diseases or it could be a feeling of regret  for doing something wrong. The movie in one stroke of the brush explores the inevitability that is death and how no one can avoid it even if they can try as they might to delay it. In my opinion this is what makes the film an excellent one as it leaves viewers so much to think and talk about and not just in one way.

The other thing I liked about the movie was its simplicity yet such beautiful execution. It opens with a wonderful panoramic shot of a girl scared from the "it" that captures the amazing scenery of the environment in one sweeping motion. This cinematography is consistent throughout the movie. The sounds are amazing and acting does its job. The ending was great as well with what the theme of the movie was and what it was trying to portray but it did irritate me a bit to not have a end of the journey in the third act of the film.
