The Finest Hours Movie Review

This is a true story about the greatest coast guard rescue mission in US Coast Guard History that happened in 1952. Bernie Webber is a coast guardsman who along with 3 other guards, is assigned the task of rescuing the people working on the oil tanker destroyed in the blizzard off of the coast of Cape Cod.

Chris Pine plays Bernie, a shy rule-abiding guardsman who wants to marry a girl named Miriam but just as he is planning to marry her, is asked by his commanding officer Daniel (Eric Bana) to embark on a dangerous mission to rescue stranded oil tanker workers. On the tanker, there is Ray Sibert (Casey Affleck) who with the help of his co-workers try to keep it afloat hoping that help will eventually arrive.

The acting is great from everyone, however the visual effects for the storm do take away from the drama and do not blend well with the emotion of the story in my opinion. I was more focused on the effect which were truly spectacular but perhaps in these type of stories you might need a little less. This is where the director Craig Gillespie falls short. He shows the emotional and physical tension of people at the coast and on the oil tanker wonderfully. However, the pacing and transition between the two felt a bit slow. I thought the music blended pretty well with the story so that is another positive.

Other than that, I like to watch these true story movies and this was worth the watch.
