Midnight Special Review

This is a sci-fi supernatural drama film that generated some buzz in the film festivals before its release. The story is about a father, Roy and his son, Alton who are trying to escape from federal authorities and cult followers after discovering that Alton has supernatural powers. Some believe he is God-sent and some think of him as a weapon. But his story is about finding who he really is and where he comes from.

The story did not blew me away and there is mystery in the film but it does not build to anything spectacular as I had expected. It is a personal movie yet not one that you go home and think about. You just watch it and take it in while you do it. This brings me to the things that intrigued me throughout was the performance of each of the actors especially, Alton played by Jaeden Lieberher and Roy played by the brilliant Michael Shannon. They form a very believable father-son bond in the movie. The writer and director Jeff Nichols deserves a mention for his visual style and close up shots on those actors reaching their emotional depth. I have only seen one other movie from Jeff which was The Mud which I liked more than this one. But it is clear that he has a hold over his characters and the actor's performances watching both those movies. He does have a slow moment in his movies although Midnight Special paced better than The Mud.

I am looking forwards to what he does next.
