L'Auberge Espagnole Movie Review

This is a French-Spanish film directed by Cédric Klapisch. I was suggested this by a friend and I will tell you its a fun time.  This is the first film in a trilogy so I do intend on watching the other two as well.
The story is about Xavier (Romain Duris) and his journey through a phase of his life reflected through the lenses of the people he meets while on a study program in Barcelona called Erasmus. He sadly leaves his girlfriend and family behind to pursue this program where he has an affair with the wife of a French doctor and also goes through many different emotions. It is with such light hearted ness that the director conveys these emotions which made me enjoy the film throughout even in the sad moments. The struggles of single student in a foreign land was so well encapsulated, it appeared to be pulled right out of an actual life event. The hilarity often happens naturally for the audience's delight and not through the actors and characters trying to deliver lines to achieve this. And this I consider to be an excellent achievement on part of this movie.  The characters of Anne Sophie (Godrèche)  and Isabelle (Cécile de France) were the most intriguing to me and both the actresses did an amazing job with their performance. I found another one of Xavier's Spanish Apartment roommate Wendy's brother William to be annoying at first but he grew on me as the film progressed and his obliviousness contributed to the funny moments. Oh, and I found out I still have a crush on Audrey Tautou. :)

To count a negative, Xavier did get on my nerves sometimes with his utter arrogance to take his infatuations so lightly. He had a crush on the doctor's wife and then on a lesbian girl (played wonderfully by Cécile). And then he still wants to keep her French girlfriend from home. Perhaps, that's just human.  At times,  the actor's performance took me away from the movie.

But overall, this is a fun movie and you will enjoy it if you give it a try.
