Sully Movie Review

Sully is a true story about the American Airlines airplane crash, sorry, I mean, "forced landing" on the Hudson river on a cold day in New York  on January 2009 by Captain Sullenberger, after both the plane's engines lost thrust due to collision with oncoming geese.  It is also about the trial that he and his co-pilot endure after this event and how Sully had to overcome both his nightmares and the trial for not making the correct decision to acknowledge that he was in fact a hero and finally be at peace with himself.

I knew about this story but being out of US and also perhaps because of naivety did not pay a lot of attention back then to understand the true emotions and actions involving those events but this movie got me very interested and understanding of all that and more with its brilliant acting and direction. Tom Hanks plays the titular Sully to perfection. His emotional range, although not as deep as one in Captain Phillips which I think has a similar tone of a guy against odds trying to fight to survive, was a joy to watch and will make you feel as though you are in this roller coaster of thoughts alongside him. Aaron Eckhart plays his co-pilot Jeff Skiles who also brings a sense of gravitas and a touch of calmness with his light hearted statements spread throughout the movie but never to overshadow the true story at hand which, I believe, is Clint Eastwood's accomplishment on this film along with Tom Stern (cinematography) and Christian Jacob and the Tierney Sutton Band (music). The use of music in this film reminded me of Titanic at some points and it jumps from moments of panic to relief and bravery very seamlessly. Watching this movie in IMAX was very satisfying as well with wide shots of New York skyline and the crazy landing on water which almost felt like the water was jumping right at you.

Oh, and talking about the trial, I was very annoyed and intrigued at how even the most courageous act can have people doubting because of a business mindset which takes control of human emotions sometimes. Such is today's life.

But a very enjoyable movie if you ask me.
