Deepwater Horizon Review

This is a disaster film based on one of the biggest oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico that happened on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in 2010. Directed by Peter Berg, the film engrossed me in the characters and the emotions from the start through its utter scale of the devastation shown and how the lives of the people got affected by it. In a way, I felt that this was the best emotionally moving disaster film since Titanic. Mark Wahlberg has been growing on my as an actor and he gives an excellent performance as the crew member, Mike Williams who is one of the living survivors of this tragedy. John Malkovich is another who portrays this evil type liaison to his best and I loved to hate him. Kurt Russell deserves a mention too. The music in the movie changes shape with the scene and feels like it grows into this menacing tone as the inevitable doom approaches. I loved its eerie undertone. Even though the individual characters themselves are not given enough time, the unfortunate event itself is portrayed so wonderfully on the screen that I couldn't help but feel for everyone (well all the major ones) of the people on board the Horizon. The movie makes you aware of the extent to which this event damaged so many lives, both humans and sea life to some extent, which is an important thing. I was annoyed towards the end when I read that the oil and gas company BP was cleared of all the charges from this tragedy.

The only thing I can remember not liking in the movie was some camera shots where the lights switched on/off for a good few seconds and that gave me headache as I couldn't focus on what I was looking at.

Overall, this is one the best movies of 2016 in my opinion.

I will soon be compiling my list of best 2016 movies but I need to watch a lot of them first. To infinity and beyond!
