Fast Eight is directed by F. Gary Gray of Straight Outta Compton fame and this is the first thing I like about this franchise is that they get different people to helm each of these movies so you can expect a new flavor but they never lose sight of what actually works for these films. That is the crazy stupid action involving cars and tanks and whatever they can think of. I did not like this one as much as the last one which had an obvious emotional thread to it but that does not take away from the entertainment value of the eighth movie in the franchise, yes 8!! It is rare for franchises to revive and hold on after so many movies and Vin Diesel and Co. have done it so far.
The movie focuses on Dom Toretto going rogue against his team.. nay.. family under the manipulation of Cipher (Charlize Theron) who has abducted his old girlfriend, Elena and their son. It was good to see some old storylines being connected in this one as we come to know that few of the characters from past movies including Jason Statham and Luke Evans also had encounters with Cipher. Tyrese Gibson's lines were cheesy as hell sometimes but they worked. The banter between The Rock and Jason was also a highlight.
This happens sometimes when I am thinking of these movies, the one thing that bothers me is how versatile this "family" is. They are now not just street racers. They can do spying, heist, you name it. Vin Diesel is now almost a superhero and they can probably make a shared car universe out of these films lol.
But overall, a fun fun time at the theaters.
