Kong: Skull Island Movie Review

Finally got to see this movie yesterday. This one is in the same Monster universe as 2014's Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla that Legendary is creating. After watching this one and inevitably having the desire to compare it with the lizard monster, I think I liked Godzilla a little more than Kong. Perhaps, it's because I am seen better apes performance in the Planet of the Apes movies.

Kong is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts which is his first big budget movie and he does an okay job especially getting the best out of the big name actors but the story itself was not very interesting to me. Of course, you don't go watch a King Kong movie expecting an engaging story but in this era of explosions, there is only so much you can do without a good story. I did not like the switching of a scene when the previous one did not seem to have played out to a completion yet and also random playing of music within the movie. The cinematography by Larry Fong is great and so is the Kong design. I was skeptical before the film about the size of him but his huge size did not bother me and I can see him taking on Godzilla in the future. The good thing is that you get to see Kong in action right in the first third instead of having to wait until the end like Godzilla. The acting is great as well from everyone although not all characters are totally fleshed out considering how they were introduced.

The actions with King Kong were great to watch. I was at one point hoping for him to show up with a secret power like Godzilla's blue fire :)
