Despicable Me 3 Review

This is the third one (technically fourth) in the Despicable Me series and let me get this out of the way. This is my third favorite of all of them. The primary reason being it was more of kid friendly than the previous two. However, I still had a lot of fun watching this one and was smiling for most of it though with lots of sudden stop starts as it was following the slow moments.

The minions are a great device for these moments and they brought my interest back. The filmmakers seemed to know that and used them at perfect moments. Minions are always great side characters. Steve Carell as Gru and his twin brother, Dru is fantastic and is the best part along with the minions which is great. It wouldn't have been good to have your lead not show up. Trey Parker as the villain Balthazar Bratt also provides for some good laughs. Essentially, all the characters are good except they weren't used to the same effectiveness as the first two movies.

There were lots of cuts between scenes even when the current narrative did not quite reach its completion. And some of these side stories were also not needed and did not add to the overall storyline. In fact, it felt like a jumbled assimilation of different episodes of a tv show. This will not be my favorite animated movie of the year. Thus far, that title goes to Lego Batman.

Overall, it was a fun time at the theaters especially if you have minion loving friends with you laughing alongside.
