King Arthur : Legend of the Sword Review

I always look forward to a Guy Ritchie movie perhaps not because of they are master pieces but more so because they are a lot of fun. I enjoyed his Sherlock Holmes and Man from U.N.C.L.E. He has a unique style filled with quick action scenes that pop on the screen.

King Arthur however takes it to a even higher level which ultimately proves to be its undoing for me. I still enjoyed the action scenes but that was where my entertainment ended. This is the origin story starring Charlie Hunnam of how Arthur became King and comes with all the myth involving Merlin and Excalibur and yes, large elephants.

Ritchie's style worked at some parts but for most of the movie, I found it hard to keep my interest. The scenes comprising of quick shots to explain the backstory looked very rushed. The exposition scenes with constant cutting to flashbacks, explaining how the present moment came to be took me away from the story. There is a reason why fantasy movies work with an old style of movie making. A slight touch of modern ness is good but there was a lot of it here. Charlie Hunnam was good in his role but the other thing that did not work for the film was that I did not feel for any of the characters. However, I think Jude Law as the villain was my favorite.
