Darkest Hour Review

I can see why Gary Oldman is being nominated for all these awards. He is amazing in this movie. He shows the vulnerability of Churchill as much as his strengths perfectly. Watching this or most war movies makes me emotional and I appreciated Dunkirk even more after this.  However it also helps me read more about the history and other aspects of an event. I did learn more about Churchill and how he was not all good even though he had massive part in English history.

The cinematography from Bruno Delbonnel particularly that of the wartime shots was excellent and especially loved the shot of explosions on the field seamlessly ending into a dead victim’s eyes.

I know in movies you only have so much time to build a story or a relationship between characters which is why it was hard for me to get the King’s support of Churchill after initially resisting him. This is especially true for a film based on true story. Also, whenever the dialogue went into deep philosophical discussion, it was hard to understand Oldman’s accent at the start of the movie.

I did not see director Joe Wright's last movie but I had heard it wasn't good and I can safely say he returned back with an excellent movie.
