Alicia Vikander plays the English archaeologist who is struggling to come to terms with supposed death of her father and the fortune that she will inherit as its result. She is spending her time doing all sorts of things to keep her mind away like bike racing, boxing, delivery etc. She finally learns to accept her father's fate and while doing that finds about the secret society called Trinity that her dad was fighting against. She becomes the Lara Croft from the video games and embarks on this journey to an island in Hong Kong to prevent Trinity from putting their hands on the tomb of ancient Japanese Queen Himiko, which is believed to have the power to bring death and destruction, you know the same old plot.
I liked how this version of Lara was not an accomplished and perfect fighter and struggled in her fights and the director, Roar Uthaug, was consistent to show this from the beginning of the movie. It always is hard to understand when a character suddenly learns all forms of martial arts without having any training (The Matrix is an exception of course with a valid reason). Alicia Vikander, despite not looking very muscular shows all the chops you see to portray a tough character capable of doing what she does in the movie. She is also a top actress so that is indeed a plus.
What I did not like was some of the fast moving camera shots which made it harder for me to follow them. The supporting characters were not built enough. Walton Goggins, plays the villain who did not catch my attention. It was also sometimes annoying to me the way he looked at a reveal with wide eyes only for the reveal to not look as spectacular as his sight made it out to be.
I still had fun watching the movie
