A Quiet Place Review

I have an update to make in the best movie of the year list. I remember when I first saw the A Quiet Place trailer in the theaters and it looked like just another small budget horror movie but with better actors. This is so much more than that. For a short synopsis, the film is set in a world which has been overtaken by these alien creatures and about a family trying to survive amidst all the chaos without making a sound cause guess what attracts the creatures.

The movie begins randomly on day 89 which is interesting. And it was perfect that they did not need to explain how everything came to where it was because it wasn't important. How Day 89 ended with the little kid dying was unexpected and woke me up for the rest of the film. Initially, I was surprised how this family wasn't grieving for their loss but then we see later how they were constantly mourning for their kid. There were several moments such as this throughout the movie where I thought things weren't explained and then they did explain them which I found very satisfying and made me appreciate the movie.  I liked how the rules of this world were pretty soundly setup throughout and they never went off course from them. The music was amazing and filled with eerie sounds amalgamated with nervous hope-fullness.

The acting from everyone (there are 4 major actors in the film) was awesome. Emily Blunt is amazing as usual (oh my god the quiet birthing scene) and I was most happy to watch John Krasinski and the teen daughter played by Millicent Simmonds. The whole movie was so filled with emotion and heart which is rare to convey on a movie like this. The fact that it was about this family and their love for each other more so than the horror element is what makes this movie so special and heart breaking to watch. I certainly had some tears towards the end. What a movie to direct on your debut (well, almost debut). Kudos John!
